Own the Home of Your Dreams with the Help of a Modern Home Designer

by | Dec 11, 2013 | Home Improvement

With the proliferation of house hunting and remodeling shows on TV these days it seems that many people are searching for their dream home. Buying a home is a big deal, and it should be. After all, you’re going to have to live with your decision for a long time. If what you want is a unique space yet every house you look at seems just too “ordinary” it might be time to consider working with a modern home designer.

A Home that’s Uniquely You

You have discerning tastes. No cookie-cutter track home for you. Walls of glass, open concept, chef’s kitchen and luxurious master suites. Walk in closets for him and her? Check. A home that is designed to your specifications is like a hand tailored suit. It fits you like a glove. A modern home designer can give you exactly what you you’re looking for.

If You’re Considering Building Your Dream Home from Scratch

Making your dream a reality is exciting. It also requires lots of patience, give and take, and teamwork. Here are a few things you should consider before you jump in.

Budget and Location – This sounds obvious, but how much are you prepared to spend on land, design and building costs? Is it realistic? Will you need to hire a civil engineer if your property is uneven? What is your budget for overages that will inevitably occur?

Building Codes – What building restrictions (height, size, orientation, etc.) exist in the jurisdiction where the home will be built?

Floor Plans – You probably have a pretty good design in mind already, but you’re going to need to have professional floor plans. You can work with an architect or choose from a vast assortment of pre-designed floor plans.

Architect and Builder – Interview several and hire one who has experience working with the style you have chosen. Check out some of his or her designs in person. Talk to a client or two. It’s important that your working style and temperament mesh well because you’re going to be working together for a long time. Your architect will also be hiring and/or working with the builder and his team to interpret your plan, and ensure the specs are followed.
One last piece of homework you should do is talk to as many people you can find who have been through the home building process to get their advice on “do’s” and “dont’s”.
