Painting 101 – Starting with the Basics of a New Color

by | Dec 7, 2015 | Home Improvement

Remodeling a room in your home can be both exciting and stressful. There is so much to consider from the type of flooring to the color of paint you want to have on the walls. This in and of itself can be a hassle when you realize you are being faced with thousands of color and shade options, each with its own selection of sheens and brands. Selecting the right one for your existing décor and future plans for the room can be difficult. But when you employ the guidance of a professional San Antonio painting company, the entire task can be made much easier on you and your family.

Clean Surfaces Work Best!

While it might seem as simple as picking a color and rolling or brushing it onto the walls, some pre-planning can help make any painting project much better in the long run. For example, paint of all types adheres better to walls which are clean, dry and free of dust. You may need to remove old paint which can require sandpaper or a sanding tool. This causes dust to accumulate on the surface which can completely ruin a future paint job if not removed. Always be sure to wash the surfaces well and give them ample time to dry before attempting a new coat of paint.

Consider the Paint Finish

Paints of all colors and brands come in different finishes. This can include matte or flat, satin or eggshell, semi-gloss and high-gloss. Each finish has better or worse benefits in different rooms, for example high gloss paints are easiest to clean so would work great in high traffic areas or children’s rooms. However, they also show underlying blemishes more than other paints. A simple blemish in the wall itself can be magnified in high gloss paint. Matte or flat colors are best used in areas that have blemished walls, or areas where surface reflections can be an annoyance such as bedrooms. Flat colors offer a uniform and smooth finish regardless of the color or brand you decide to go with.

Compare Other Home Projects

Whether you need inspiration or just wanted to see what other people are doing with their San Antonio painting projects, you can always open a home décor magazine or browse online for examples. If working with a professional company, ask about their portfolio and see what others have had them do in the past. This can give you a great glimpse into their experience levels for interior painting projects.
