Improve Your Home with Membrane Roofing

Have you been considering a new roof? There are many types of available roofing in Harrisburg. One type of roofing that has great benefits is known as membrane roofing. Membrane roofing in Harrisburg is made specifically to minimize leaking and to address other problems that have come across in other types of roofing design. In the membrane roofing category, there are basically three different types: thermoplastic, synthetic rubber and bitumen. Though traditionally used in commercial roofing, membrane roofing is commonly being used in residential roofing and looks just as good as other traditional roof applications.

Types of Membrane Roofing

Thermoplastic – One type of membrane roofing is known as thermoplastic membrane roofing. Thermoplastic roofing uses PVC sheets that, when heated, will form a tight seal. This helps to eliminate any water from getting inside, even if there is damage to the outer layer of the roof, which is made up of shingles. These are typically less expensive than rubber, but they will need more maintenance than other types of membrane roofing.

Synthetic Rubber –
Another type of membrane roofing is known as synthetic rubber roofing. Similar to the thermoplastic membrane listed above, a rubber membrane is a huge sheet of rubber that is placed between the shingles and the roof protection material. Because the rubber membrane is attached tightly at the seams, water is unable to get through. As an extra barrier, another piece of rubber is then placed over the seams and melted, making a virtually leak proof membrane under the shingles.

Bitumen –
Bitumen roofing is one of the most common types of membranes for roofing in residential applications. It is typically cheaper than the other types of membranes and is seen as a step up from asphalt roofing. Essentially it is a combination of the best aspects of asphalt as well as the best features of rubber and mixed together into a mixture that brings the best of both worlds. You get a virtually unbreakable seal with a bitumen membrane and it will last for many years.

Main Benefits of Membrane Roofing

If you are considering membrane roofing, you should know that there are some great benefits. The main benefit is, of course, that the membrane is much less likely to leak when compared to other types of roofing. In addition, even if there is a leak, these roofs are much easier to fix and the leaks themselves are much easier to locate. Finally, because they are resistant to UV light and resist the normal expansion and contraction of other roofs, they are longer lasting.

If you need a new roof, consider the membrane roof. As you can see there are several great advantages of this type of roof and because of its longevity, it can be an even better value than other roof types.
